UK gives green light to 400 MW solar project 634q2q
Boom Power has obtained planning permission for the 400 MW solar project in East Yorkshire, England. The UK Secretary of State for Energy, Ed Miliband, approved the Development Consent Order (DCO) application for the plan to be built on a site near Howden. The project is expected to connect to the grid at the Drax substation in 2029. 1r3h58
Boom Power is proud to announce that development consent has been granted for the East Yorkshire Solar Farm, marking a significant milestone in accelerating the UK’s transition toward sustainable, low-carbon energy.
The East Yorkshire Solar Farm, located between the village of Gribthorpe, the towns of Spaldington and Wressle, and the city of Howden, is expected to generate approximately 400 MW of electricity—enough to power around 100,000 homes. This contribution s the government’s goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and generate 70 gigawatts of solar electricity by 2035.
As a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), the solar farm was approved through a Development Consent Order (DCO). Following initial consultations in 2022, the DCO application was formally submitted in December 2023. The examination concluded in November 2024, and the Planning Inspectorate’s appointed Examining Authority submitted its recommendation to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, in February 2025. The Secretary of State issued the development consent on May 9, 2025.
The project design underwent a rigorous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and was shaped by multiple rounds of public consultation. Buffer zones and screening vegetation will help reduce visual impact, while existing hedgerows will be preserved to maintain the rural landscape’s character.
The development includes the creation of wildlife habitats such as grasslands and woodlands, and an extensive area adjacent to the River Foulness has been included within the order limits to overwintering bird species. Additionally, the project will preserve public rights of way and improve local access through the introduction of permissive paths.
The construction and operation of the East Yorkshire Solar Farm will bring significant economic benefits to the local community, with expected job opportunities during construction and indirect for local businesses.
Mark Hogan, Founder of Boom Power, stated:“The development consent for the East Yorkshire Solar Farm is not only a moment of pride and significance for Boom Power, but also a major step forward in the UK’s clean energy landscape. It demonstrates our ability to deliver nationally important infrastructure. The project has been carefully designed to integrate renewable energy generation with environmental enhancements and grid stability considerations.”
Benedikt von Bary, Partner and Managing Director at Pelion Green Future, an investor in Boom Power, added: “This approval highlights the outstanding work of the entire Boom team and its partners. It underscores our commitment to ing high-impact renewable energy projects that deliver long-term value, and we look forward to seeing this project move ahead and contribute to the UK’s clean energy future.”
