Next-gen floating solar platform developed for extreme marine conditions 125h5u

The italian multinational Saipem presented the first full-scale prototype of XolarSurf, a cutting-edge modular floating solar solution designed to operate in harsh offshore environments and withstand waves up to 8 meters high. The prototype was launched into the sea at Kystteknikk’s facilities in Dyrvik, on the island of Frøya, at the mouth of the Trondheim Fjord in Norway.  w2g37

This step marks the inaugural real-world test of the XolarSurf product. The prototype is expected to remain at sea for approximately one year, during which its performance and power generation capabilities will be closely monitored.

XolarSurf is designed to generate electricity using solar s mounted on floaters specifically engineered for marine environments. Its innovative design features “islands” composed of several smaller floaters, creating a secure platform for the photovoltaic s. Each floater is capable of producing between 35 to 45 kWp of installed power.

Developed in collaboration with Norwegian manufacturer Kystteknikk and other subcontractors, the XolarSurf prototype represents a significant advancement in floating solar technology.

Moss Maritime, Saipem’s Norwegian subsidiary specializing in marine energy design and engineering, spearheaded the development of this modular floating solar solution.
