Great Britain sets a new solar power generation record: 12,569 GW 4u4pa

Great Britain has achieved a significant milestone in its transition to a zero-carbon electricity system, with solar power generation reaching an all-time high of 12.569 gigawatts (GW) on 1 April, according to National Electricity System Operator (NESO). During the peak period between 12:30 and 1pm, solar energy generated 12.2GW, breaking previous records and highlighting the growing role of renewable energy in the UK’s energy mix. 5q3764

This achievement is a key step forward in the country’s commitment to operating a zero-carbon electricity system for sustained periods throughout the year. As solar energy continues to play a pivotal role in the UK's energy strategy, this record generation marks an important point in the transition towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Commenting on the National Energy System Operator's (NESO) announcement, Jess Ralston, analyst at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said:

"Every new solar installed in the UK makes us less dependent on gas imports, which is good for our energy independence as well as for stabilising energy bills given the sun offers up its power for free. As we install more solar and build more wind turbines, our reliance on gas will fall, as will our vulnerability to the likes of Putin. Volatile gas prices cost us an extra £140bn since the crisis began so there are benefits for tax payers and bill payers alike."

For those looking to stay updated on the progress of solar generation, the NESO encourages s to their app for real-time data and updates.

This landmark event is not just a record-breaking moment but also a testament to the country's continued efforts to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable energy future.
