Wind energy leads in 2024: Great Britain achieves its highest generation ever 4ar22
In 2024, for the first time in history, wind energy was the largest source of electricity generation in Great Britain, ing for 30%. 2x5c4f
According to a report from the National Grid ESO (NESO), renewables generated more than 50% of electricity for four consecutive quarters (Q4 2023 - Q3 2024) for the first time, with an average of 51% during 2024.
During the past year, several factors combined to drive new records in wind intensity.
On September 30, the Ratcliffe power station was decommissioned for the last time, marking the end of 142 years of coal-fired electricity generation in Great Britain. To replace traditional coal supply, renewables played a crucial role, especially solar energy and biomass.
Last year also saw the lowest carbon intensity, averaging 125 CO2/kWh. Additionally, the highest annual zero-carbon generation occurred, at 51%. In December, the record for maximum wind generation was broken at 22,523 MW, enabling wind to provide 68.3% of electricity in Great Britain.
Demand 6t154n
Demand remained at its lowest levels during the summer, as longer and sunnier days reduced the need for lighting and heating homes.
A yearly peak of 45,096 MW was reached in January, while the lowest demand was recorded in August at 30,022 MW, illustrating seasonal differences.
Events like the UEFA Euro 2024 impacted demand, causing spikes and valleys due to the "TV Pick Up" effect during matches.
