On September 17, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled her proposed candidates for the College of Commissioners, marking the start of the parliamentary confirmation process. While the nominations are still subject to approval, von der Leyen has already communicated her expectations for the new mandate, particularly focusing on the role of Dan Jørgensen, the designated Commissioner for Energy and Housing.  16435i

In a letter to Jørgensen, former Danish Minister for Climate, von der Leyen emphasized the urgency of an Electrification Action Plan as a central component of the Commission's strategy. The letter underscores the critical need for a robust, actionable plan to drive Europe’s transition to clean, renewable energy and meet ambitious climate targets. 

Key to this strategy is the acceleration of renewable energy deployment and the development of advanced energy infrastructure. Jørgensen’s mandate will involve leading efforts to enhance the Energy Union, ensuring that Europe secures clean, affordable, and reliable energy supplies. This includes scaling up renewable energy production, modernizing energy infrastructure, and boosting energy efficiency. 

The Commission’s vision prioritizes integrating renewable sources such as solar and wind into the grid, advancing energy storage solutions, and fostering electrification across sectors. Additionally, the letter highlights the need for a socially equitable transition, addressing energy poverty, reducing energy costs, and enhancing public participation in the energy transition. 

To achieve these objectives, the Commission plans to advance the RePowerEU initiative, aiming to diminish Europe’s reliance on Russian energy and expedite investments in clean energy infrastructure, including grids, storage, and transportation systems.
