Romania’s Ministry of Energy, led by Minister Sebastian Burduja, has officially announced the launch of the most ambitious renewable energy auction in the country’s history. Through the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, a total of 3,472 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity will be put up for bidding. 3i2546

The auctioned capacity is divided as follows:

• 2,000 MW for onshore wind power projects,

• 1,472 MW for solar photovoltaic projects.

The maximum strike prices have been set at €80/MWh for wind energy and €73/MWh for solar energy, aiming to attract competitive offers under a transparent and efficient process.

This second round of auctions follows the success of the first one, held last year, in which financing contracts were signed for approximately 1,000 MW of wind power and 500 MW of solar projects.“Today, Romania writes a new chapter in its energy independence story,” said Minister Burduja. “With this unprecedented call, we are opening the gates for the largest green energy investments in recent decades. We’re talking about thousands of megawatts that will mean lower bills for Romanians, better-paying jobs across the country, and a more secure, competitive, and cleaner economy.”

Key updates in this new auction round include the removal of the previous 25% cap per applicant, allowing investors to submit multiple bids with no capacity limits. Additionally, a 120% threshold for marginal offers has been introduced to avoid disqualifying large-capacity projects over narrow margins.
