Pressure intensifies on the new Labour government to scrap penalties for renewable energy owners 2i143b

London-based energy cooperative Ripple Energy, which sells shares of renewable energy projects to citizens, has called on the UK government to remove financial penalties for individuals who own their own sources of renewable energy.  6i313u

The company is committed to the democratization of renewable energy and increasing citizen participation in the country's energy transition. According to Ripple Energy, an increasing number of people are unable to install solar s on their roofs, such as renters and those living in flats. For these individuals, energy cooperatives offer a solution by allowing them to own a small stake in large-scale wind and solar farms, receiving green and low-cost electricity in their homes through the grid and their energy provider.

Ripple Energy has launched the "Own Your Power" campaign to make ing large-scale energy cooperatives more accessible by removing financial barriers.

While the cooperative acknowledges the government's efforts, including its promised for community energy projects, it is calling for a simple and accessible levy exemption for green energy ownership. Green energy levies are added to electricity bills to renewable energy in Britain, but Ripple Energy argues that people should not have to pay these levies on electricity supplied from their own wind or solar farms.

Additionally, Ripple Energy is urging the government to provide low-cost loans or grants for people on lower incomes to help them purchase their share of a wind or solar farm. They are also requesting an end to taxes on bill savings, as savings from cooperative energy ownership are currently treated as interest income and therefore subject to taxation.

According to the cooperative, these measures would enable citizens to accelerate the country’s green energy targets set for 2030.
