Portugal supplies 78% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy 445x5e
Portugal continues to make progress towards the energy transition. In February, renewable production supplied 78% of the country’s electricity consumption. Non-renewable production ed for 13% of consumption, while the remaining 9% was supplied through imported energy. 1z375q
According to the operator Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), so far this year, renewable production has supplied 77% of consumption, distributed as follows: hydroelectric with 38%, wind with 28%, solar with 6%, and biomass with 5%. Natural gas production ed for 13% of consumption, while the external trade balance contributed the remaining 10%.
Regarding electricity consumption, despite February having one day less this year than in 2024, electricity consumption recorded an annual growth of 3.2% (2.7% with temperature and working day adjustments).
Similar to January, conditions were very favorable for hydroelectric power, with a productivity index of 1.28 (historical average equal to 1). In contrast, both wind and solar energy conditions were particularly unfavorable, with respective indices of 0.71 and 0.83. In the case of solar energy, the continuous increase in installed capacity allowed for maintaining a high annual growth rate (27%), reaching, for the first time, network delivery peaks around 2,800 MW.
For the period of January and February, the hydroelectric productivity index was 1.25, the wind productivity index was 1.00, and the solar productivity index was 0.82.
In the gas market, consumption grew by 3.8%, driven by the positive performance of the electricity generation segment, which ed an annual variation of 61%, due to lower availability of renewable energy compared to the same period last year. In the conventional segment, which includes other consumers, consumption fell by 8.3%, mainly due to declines in large industrial consumers.
