NGOs and businesses demand a greener EU budget to drive the climate transition h2y4w

A coalition of 47 businesses, civil society organisations, associations, and investors from across Europe has issued an open letter urging the European Commission to prioritise investments in the green and just transition. The letter, addressed to Commissioners-designate, calls for the adoption of a greener EU budget and a successor to the Next Generation EU programme. 182b2y

Key signatories include prominent names such as CLG Europe, Danone, PepsiCo, Uber, Transport & Environment (T&E), and WWF EU. The coalition stresses the need for a clear investment strategy to maintain Europe’s competitive advantage while meeting the climate and biodiversity targets set out in the European Green Deal.

"For European businesses, the green transition is more than a responsibility – it’s a chance to boost innovation and competitiveness. But to seize these opportunities, we need a robust and comprehensive EU investment plan that channels both public and private capital into sustainable solutions," said Ursula Woodburn, Director of CLG Europe. "Without decisive action, Europe risks jeopardising its leadership in the green economy."

Xavier Sol, Director of Sustainable Finance at T&E, highlighted the importance of aligning investments with EU climate laws: "A public investment package must go beyond the current EU budget and fully align with environmental and climate goals. Without additional funding, we not only risk falling short on our climate targets but also jeopardise food, water, and energy security."

The signatories urge the European Commission to accelerate the transition to a climate-neutral, zero-pollution, and nature-positive future, benefiting both people and businesses across the region.
