The data shows that battery electric vehicles (BEVs) ed for 15.2% of the EU’s market share, up from a low of 12% in the first quarter of 2024. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) experienced a significant surge, reaching 35.5% of the market and remaining the preferred choice among EU consumers. Meanwhile, the combined market share of petrol and diesel vehicles dropped to 38.3%, down from 48.3% during the same period in 2024.

In the first quarter of 2025, sales of new battery electric vehicles grew by 23.9%, reaching 412,997 units, representing 15.2% of the EU's total market share. Three of the EU's four largest markets — which together for 63% of BEV registrations — posted significant gains: (+38.9%), Belgium (+29.9%), and the Netherlands (+7.9%). This contrasted with , which saw a 6.6% decline.
First-quarter figures also showed a 20.7% increase in hybrid electric vehicle registrations across the EU, driven by strong growth in the four largest markets: (+47.5%), Spain (+36.6%), Italy (+15.3%), and (+10.5%). This amounted to 964,108 ed units in Q1 2025, ing for 35.5% of the EU’s market share.
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) registrations grew by 1.1% in the first quarter of 2025, totaling 207,048 units. This was mainly due to significant volume increases in key markets such as (+41.8%) and Spain (+30.7%). As a result, PHEVs represented 7.6% of total EU registrations, up from 7.4% in Q1 2024.
In March 2025, year-on-year growth reached 17.1% for battery electric vehicles, 23.9% for hybrid electric vehicles, and 12.4% for plug-in hybrids.
