Wind power reached 38% of Ireland’s electricity mix in the first quarter of 2025 2d5gm
The latest report from Wind Energy Ireland shows that Irish wind farms provided 38% of the country's electricity during the first quarter of 2025. 1eu5p
In addition, the figures revealed that electricity demand in March 2025 rose slightly to 3,673 GWh, compared to 3,598 GWh in the same month last year.
The share of electricity demand met by wind farms last month—33%—was slightly below the typical average for wind energy in March. However, the shortfall was partially offset by a record month for solar energy.
Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, stated:“Our provided one-third of Ireland’s electricity in March. Every time a wind turbine generates power, we reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels, help bring down wholesale electricity prices, and boost our supply of clean energy to power our homes, businesses, and local communities.”

On the price front, the report brings good news: the average wholesale electricity price in Ireland fell for the second consecutive month, reaching €131.80 per MWh in March.
On the windiest days, the average cost of one megawatt-hour of electricity dropped to €112.26. In contrast, on days when Ireland relied almost entirely on fossil fuels, the cost nearly doubled to €165.19.
Cunniffe added: “The Government’s Climate Action Plan 2025, published last week, highlights the importance of strengthening our electricity grid and increasing the amount of power generated from renewable sources like wind and solar. The Irish people want the clean energy that wind and solar farms deliver. By reinforcing our electricity network, we can build an energy-independent Ireland that provides more affordable electricity, meets the needs of our growing economy, and keeps Ireland competitive.”
