First foundations for Denmark's largest offshore wind farm arrive at Eemshaven port 254v3d

RWE has made progress in the construction of its Thor offshore wind project in the Danish North Sea. The first batch of eight monopile foundations for the wind turbines has been unloaded and stored at the port of Eemshaven, in the Netherlands. This will be the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date.  683q6g

According to RWE, each monopile is up to 100 meters long and weighs 1,500 tons each, roughly the equivalent of 1,000 small cars. A total of 72 of these foundations will be handled at Eemshaven.

The installation of the turbines is scheduled to take place from the port of Esbjerg (Denmark) starting in 2026. Thorsminde port will serve as the operations and maintenance base, creating between 50 and 60 local jobs. Construction of RWE's new service building is expected to begin later this year.

With a capacity of over 1 GW, the Thor offshore wind farm will be able to produce enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households. The wind farm is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2027 at the latest.

RWE Offshore Wind’s Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Michel, stated that “the arrival of the first batch of monopiles at the port marks an important milestone in the delivery of our Thor project, the largest offshore wind farm in Denmark to date. Building offshore wind farms requires extensive port capacity and specialized port infrastructure to handle heavy components. Such capabilities are becoming increasingly hard to find. We are delighted to have secured the bus terminal once again. The facilities at the port of Eemshaven are ideal. We recently used the port to the construction of our Kaskasi wind farm."

The Eemshaven bus terminal, part of Hamburg-based terminal operator Buss Ports, provides storage space, heavy-duty unloading equipment, and operators at the port while managing port logistics. In the spring of 2025, the foundations will be shipped from the Dutch heavy cargo terminal at Eemshaven to the Thor construction site in the Danish North Sea, located about 22 kilometers off the west coast of Jutland.

Marc Wegman, General Manager of Buss Terminal Eemshaven, said: "Our skilled staff will ensure a safe and seamless handling process at our state-of-the-art Eemshaven terminal, where safety is our top priority."
