Dominion Energy completes first installation season for 2.6 GW Virginia Offshore Wind project 3n6j
Dominion Energy has announced the installation of 78 monopile foundations and 4 substation foundations for the 2.6 GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project during the first installation season, achieving the company's initial goal of installing at least 70 monopiles on the seabed 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. 1l6x7
CVOW is the largest offshore wind project under construction in the U.S. It will consist of 176 turbines that will generate enough clean, renewable energy to power up to 660.000 homes and is expected to produce $3 billion in fuel savings for customers during its first 10 years of operation.
Construction of CVOW is expected to be completed by late 2026. The project is currently 43% complete. Over the coming months, the company will focus on installing the first offshore substation, continuing the laying of export cables and building the onshore transmission, and placing transition pieces on the monopiles in preparation for turbine installation starting in 2025.
The economic development and job creation benefits provided by offshore wind energy are transformative for Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth.
Nearly 1.000 Virginia-based workers (over 800 in the Hampton Roads region) have participated in the CVOW project or ing businesses. More than 1,000 local jobs will be needed to ongoing operations and maintenance once the project begins commercial operations.
Dominion Energy President and CEO, Robert M. Blue, stated, “As we face unprecedented demand from customers, offshore wind is critical to our diverse energy generation mix to keep our customers powered with energy that is affordable, reliable, and increasingly clean.”
The monopile foundations, being prepared at the Portsmouth Marine Terminal, are single vertical steel cylinders manufactured by global leader EEW SPC and are being installed on the seabed to wind turbine generators supplied by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. According to the project's construction schedule, monopile installations will resume in May 2025.
