BOEM greenlights 2 GW offshore wind project in Maryland 2y4x6y

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced today its approval of the Construction and Operations Plan for the Maryland Offshore Wind Project, marking the final federal approval required for the project. This milestone advances the Biden-Harris istration’s ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. h4h2

The project, located approximately 8.7 nautical miles offshore Maryland and about 9 nautical miles from Sussex County, Delaware, is designed to generate over 2 gigawatts of clean, renewable energy. This capacity is enough to power more than 718,000 homes across the Delmarva Peninsula.

“I am pleased to announce BOEM’s approval of our nation’s tenth commercial-scale offshore wind energy project,” said BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein. “This project will almost 2,680 jobs annually over seven years while driving job creation, economic growth, and progress in addressing the climate crisis.”

The Maryland Offshore Wind Project includes up to 114 wind turbine generators, four offshore substation platforms, a meteorological tower, and four offshore export cable corridors. The project will be developed in phases, with MarWin and Momentum Wind already certified by Maryland’s offshore renewable energy program.

In approving the project, BOEM incorporated extensive from Tribal Nations, government agencies, ocean s, and other stakeholders to ensure measures were in place to minimize impacts on marine life and important ocean activities, such as fishing.

This project builds on the Department of the Interior’s momentum, having approved over 15 gigawatts of clean energy from ten offshore wind projects since 2021—enough to power nearly 5.25 million homes. The istration has also conducted record-setting offshore wind lease auctions, including in the Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Gulf of Maine, underscoring the United States' commitment to a sustainable energy future.
