Megawatt Mosaic has obtained planning and grid connection consent for a portfolio of four 99 MW BESS sites in Italy. Two of these will be located in Sardinia and two in Tuscany.  2f2s40

The projects will be part of the Tyrrhenian Link, a planned subsea transmission connection between the Italian mainland and the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Megawatt Mosaic’s Director of Asset Management, Helen field, explained that over the past three years, the company has analyzed more than 700 potential connection points in Italy to identify locations with feasibility for construction, connection, and operation.

With land rights secured, grid connection permission granted by TERNA, and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) completed for all four projects, field celebrated this progress as “an important milestone” and stated that they are ready to partner with investors to advance the projects to the next stage of development. However, she noted that additional investment is still required for “last mile” development to bring these projects to “ready-to-build” status. 

The Tyrrhenian Link and grid stability 

Megawatt Mosaic’s projects are part of theTyrrhenian Link, a next-generation EU infrastructure project valued at 3.8 billion euros. This high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link will connect mainland Italy with Sardinia and Sicily through a double subsea cable of approximately 970 km in length and a capacity of 1.000 MW. 

This infrastructure aims to enhance the stability of the electrical system on both islands, strengthen grid security, and allow for a more flexible integration of renewable energy sources, contributing to the goal of gradually phasing out coal-fired power plants.
