Markus Rauramo, CEO of Finnish energy company Fortum, has officially assumed the presidency of Eurelectric, the association representing the European electricity industry. He is ed by Catherine MacGregor, CEO of Engie, and Georgios Stassis, Chairman and CEO of PPC, as vice-presidents. The new leadership arrives at a pivotal moment. With Europe under increasing pressure from climate change, geopolitical instability and rising industrial competition, the electricity sector is positioning itself as a central force for transformation. For Rauramo, the message is clear: there is no time to waste.

This is no time for hesitation. We must electrify to decarbonise, industrialise to compete, and digitalise to lead,” said Rauramo. “Let us match our ambition with action—and build a secure and resilient Europe that leads, not follows, in the age of clean power.”

Rauramo’s presidency will prioritise accelerating electrification, expanding grid infrastructure, and investing in firm and flexible power capacity. According to Eurelectric, these actions are essential to building a future-proof electricity system that can withstand extreme weather events, cyber threats and supply chain disruptions.

Vice-president Catherine MacGregor underscored the strategic importance of energy resilience. “Europe’s resilience depends on a secure, decarbonised and reliable power system. In a world of rising uncertainties, energy security requires continuous learning and frequent adaptation,” she said. “Our industry is fully committed to investing in clean energy and further enhancing cross-border cooperation to safeguard our electricity supply.”

A central focus of the new presidency will be the digital transformation of the energy sector. The team sees digital technologies and artificial intelligence as key enablers to improve efficiency, manage demand and enhance system flexibility. “Europe’s energy system must be future-proofed through intelligent power,” added vice-president Georgios Stassis. “By embracing digital innovation, we can position Europe at the forefront of the global clean-tech and AI revolution—while building an energy system that is secure, efficient and ready for the future.”

To this vision, Eurelectric will also launch cutting-edge research on electrification, digitalisation and energy security. The goal is to provide evidence-based guidance to policymakers, industry stakeholders and consumers as Europe navigates a critical decade of transition.
