How enspired’s technology is transforming the BESS industry for a smarter energy market 1t5fa
In an exclusive interview with Review Energy at Intersolar Europe 2025, Jürgen Pfalzer, Chief Growth Officer of enspired, discussed the company’s mission to the global energy transition through cutting-edge battery energy storage systems (BESS) optimization. Founded with the goal of maximizing the revenue potential of flexible energy assets, enspired currently has 1 GW of grid-scale battery storage under management, with a focus on making these systems more efficient, profitable, and integral to stabilizing power grids. 486ul
Optimizing Flexibility for the Energy Transition
Pfalzer explained that enspired was born out of a clear objective: to the energy transition by optimizing flexible assets—particularly grid-scale battery storage. “The coolest flexible assets available at the moment are grid-scale battery storage,” he noted, highlighting the company's long-standing expertise in storage, which dates back to the founding team's early work in optimizing pumped storage back in 2015.
“The challenge with batteries is that they are complex assets,” Pfalzer continued. “There are many different parameters—performance warranties, market signals, and so on—so bringing all of these factors together to maximize revenue for clients is a sophisticated effort. To do this successfully, you need very intelligent technology.”
Overcoming challenges in degradation-informed optimization
One of enspired’s groundbreaking strategies involves using battery degradation data to inform its optimization efforts. According to Pfalzer, understanding the unique degradation patterns of each battery and incorporating that information into the trading strategy allows enspired to extend the life of the asset, resulting in higher long-term revenues. And in a push for more transparency around revenues, enspired is the first and only optimizer to publish its BESS portfolio performance—a metric which reflects actual earnings attested by an independent third party in KPMG Austria.
As enspired continues to expand its BESS optimization platform across Europe, it is already eyeing new global markets. Pfalzer emphasized that the company’s strategy is not just about entering established markets; it’s also about identifying emerging regions such as Spain where energy storage solutions will be crucial in the near future. “We are always looking ahead—evaluating markets that are on the verge of significant growth,” he said.
In keeping with this strategy, enspired recently announced that it is bringing grid-scale battery optimization to Greece for the first time ever, starting with a 270 MW asset portfolio owned by Optimus Energy, the country’s largest renewables aggregator. Over the past year, enspired has also expanded its reach to countries such as Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria.
BESS and grid stability: The key to a sustainable future
The role of BESS in stabilizing the grid is more critical than ever, particularly as renewable energy sources like solar and wind bring volatility to power markets. Pfalzer discussed the recent blackout in Spain, which underscored the need for faster deployment of battery storage systems. “The expansion of renewables is happening quickly, but storage infrastructure isn’t keeping up. We need to build BESS faster to prevent grid instability,” he said.
With an increasing number of projects under management—including some of ’s largest battery systems—enspired is not only optimizing for profit but also contributing to grid stability. By leveraging its optimization platform, the company is ensuring that batteries can deliver a steady, reliable energy supply, balancing the grid while also generating significant returns.
The future of BESS: Policy and grid access challenges
Despite the impressive growth of the BESS market, challenges remain. One key issue identified by Pfalzer is the difficulty in securing grid access. “Grid access is often limited, and getting batteries connected to the grid is a complex process. To make BESS a reliable tool for energy storage, it’s crucial that more work is done to simplify and speed up grid access,” he noted.
Pfalzer’s insights reflect the broader challenges facing the industry as it scales. As BESS continues to play a pivotal role in the energy transition, addressing these barriers will be crucial to accelerating the widespread adoption of battery storage.
Intersolar Europe: A platform for shaping the future
For enspired, Intersolar Europe 2025 was more than just an exhibition; it was an opportunity to shape the future of energy storage. “We really like Intersolar because it’s a great meeting point for the entire industry. It allows us to connect with many people in a short period of time and move things forward,” said Pfalzer.
He emphasized that enspired is committed to pushing the boundaries of technology and market development to ensure that BESS can unlock its full potential. “We like to shape markets. We like to shape technology. Intersolar is a big opportunity for us to make progress in these areas,” he concluded.
